About Us

Founder:

Breakthrough Educational Services was founded by Elinor Mintz - an Ontario Certified Teacher, education enthusiast, curriculum specialist and study and learning skills strategist. Elinor has successfully tutored hundreds of students over the past seventeen years and has honed exceptional learning and teaching skills that she utilizes when assisting students to develop a clear, fundamental, and deep understanding of course content.

After completing her undergraduate degree in Psychology, Mathematics, and Science, Elinor went on to pursue a Master of Teaching degree (M.T.) with a major in Mathematics at the renowned Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto. The completion of her graduate studies really exemplifies the kind of teacher Elinor is: someone who is passionate about perfecting her teaching craft to better assist her students and a teacher who demonstrates a real love for both teaching and learning in all forms.

Elinor possesses an in-depth knowledge of the Ontario curriculum content, guidelines, and expectations. In addition, she has a clear and simple delivery approach and extensive experience working with students of various ages, personalities, and abilities, which all makes her a highly effective educator. Elinor makes learning interesting (some students even say “fun”) and applicable to the real world. Her expertise in learning strategies and study expectations really sets a high bar for both teaching and learning in her studio. Elinor has also trained her tutors to be effective teachers armed with excellent teaching and learning strategies so that students can reach their maximum academic potential.

At Breakthrough Educational Services, we do make learning fun whilst still teaching the fundamentals! Our assessments and teaching approaches are holistically-based. We focus not only on assessing the level of fundamental academic skills knowledge, but we also identify and correct foundational gaps and utilize our keen abilities to point out further areas that require improvement. We basically analyze both the seen and unseen, and work on additional obstacles affecting students’ progress. This includes: learning proper independent study skills and habits as well as appropriate techniques for academic self-regulation. We strategize and subsequently teach procedural knowledge, conceptual understanding, and problem solving skills using effective teaching and learning techniques and tools so that pupils can perform at their optimal level and become self-sustained academics.

Our after-care service is unparalleled and FREE – this means: we provide continuous post-session feedback to parents via prompt phone calls, pre and/or post-session texts, and/or progress reports after each tutorial. Students can contact us outside of their regular sessions if questions arise regarding any homework discussed or taught in-session. We are happy to assist with queries whenever time allows outside of regular sessions at no additional charge.*

Our tutoring work and guidance with students over time naturally produces: increased self-confidence, self-efficacy, self-esteem, and motivation, coupled with the development of academic independence (learning how to be an independent, self-regulated learner with excellent study habits). We also assist students in their development of both academic and personal responsibility and accountability, which plays a large role in becoming an achiever both in and outside of school, which impacts more than just their academic lives.
